The need for early childhood experiences in literature, art, music, dance and other forms of creative expression is the major emphasis of the Cultural Arts Committee. The Cultural Arts program at Willow Springs Elementary School enables students to experience a variety of performances offered by professional artists. These artists and educators have been evaluated and approved by the United Arts of Wake County. The disciplines available to choose from include theater, literary, dance, art, music, folk art, and story telling.
Eileen Heyes
Author ~ journalist ~ Writer in Residence
(Oct 12-16 and Oct 19-23)

How to Become an Author in 10 Easy Steps. From the idea through the completion of a draft — is that 10 steps? Well, no. Actually that’s just Step One. As they learn the stories behind Eileen’s books, students get their questions answered about the rest of the authoring process, including revision, contracts, editing, illustration, book design, promotion, and finally the arrival of the royalty check. All ages.
Character: The Foundation of Narrative. Good writers know that plot grows out of character, not the other way around. Students learn to create original characters and then use the characters to launch a compelling, well-structured story. (Teachers have fun participating, too.) See a five-day lesson plan outline and study materials. Grades 4-12.
You’re a Poet, and You Know It. Students practice looking inside and outside themselves to find imagery, metaphor, and meaning ... but that’s just the beginning. They then learn to use the poet’s revision tools of assonance, consonance, rhyme, meter, and more to polish first rough efforts into lyrical gems. See a five-day lesson plan outline. Grades 4-12. |

Tarradiddle Players
(Sept 24th, Nov 18th)

The Commedia King Arthur
By Lane Riosley
The Tarradiddle Players are back with another Commedia tale, and this time they dare to take on an English classic: the Tales of King Arthur. Our Players have never been so audacious (or quite so silly) as when trying to pull this one off. Bedraggled young squire Arthur forgets his master's sword and has to find a substitute, fast, or risk losing his job. What’s a young squire to do? Grab the nearest sword he can find, of course, never mind that it’s sticking out of a big rock. And the rest, as they say, is history. Or at least legend. This fast-moving production features a sprinkling of well known Arthurian stories, making it a perfect introduction to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Lancelot and the Ogre, and King Arthur and the most adorable little dragon you have ever seen. What? No adorable dragons in the Tales of King Arthur? Are you sure about that? See for yourself!

Robbi K
(March 31)

Robbi K invites families to join her and her band of friends for a rousing, interactive journey through many musical styles and songs!
Robbi K is one of the few African American women to have achieved national recognition in the field of children’s music. Unlike many of today’s children's musicians, Robbi's background is not in rock, but rather is in jazz, pop, and world beat. For years she has maintained an active schedule as a back-up singer with such artists as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Jewel, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, and Harry Belafonte among others. Her TV appearances with these artists include Oprah, 60 Minutes, Rosie, Regis & Kathie Lee, The View, VH-1 Storytellers, The Today Show, and Late Night with David Letterman.
Robbi is married to Grammy-winning bassist Bakithi Kumalo, whose longstanding association with Paul Simon since Graceland is a story unto itself. Robbi K & Friends’ concerts showcase material from Robbi’s award-winning albums while also including a selection of other “Robbi favorites.” Backed by a four-member band, Robbi K will get silly (“Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy!”), get down (“Feel da’ Beat”), and get sweet (“Favorite Things”). As always, Robbi encourages the audience to open themselves to the sheer joy of music. What a great thing for a family to do!
